River Hills Ranch
"In memory of our friend and co-worker, Myron Plooster, who passed away unexpectedly on December 9, 2009. He was an important member of our cattle crew for the past 12 years. Myron was a kind, gentle man who enjoyed hunting and fishing with his three boys at the ranch along the Missouri River. He was loved and we will miss him."
River Hills Ranch was established in 1994 by Harold W. Steele. The operation now consists of over 16,000 acres of pastures, fertile fields, and prime hunting ground along the Missouri River breaks. Today we breed over 1,500 head of Registered Angus. We hold 2 bull sales each year - one Annual Sale in February and the second "Back to Grass" Sale in May. Our female sale is held in November. All of our sales are held at the ranch in our newly renovated Sale Barn.
River Hills Ranch is located 10 miles west of Platte, South Dakota. At West Hwy 50 go south 2 miles and you'll enter the main ranch property. Located here is our Sale Arena; the Ranch Office, which is a renovated farm house of the 1800s; the Tool Shop for heavy equipment maintenance; the Equipment Storage pole barn; grain storage bins; and several feed lots. To the east of the ranch is our state-of-the-art calving barn with feed lots and calving pastures.
The calving season is designed to fit into a Spring and Fall program with over 900 calves born each year at the ranch. Our calving barns provide protection to the young calves and enable us to monitor the pregnant heifers.
Our farming operation is just as important to the future of River Hills Ranch as our livestock. Nearly all of the feed for the cattle is grown on the ranch. We have over 5,000 acres of farm ground that is planted to corn and corn chow for silage, as well as alfalfa and high quality hay for sale. We market and deliver the hay to dairy farms and feeders in the Midwest.
River Hills Ranch is dedicated to breeding the best genetics in the Angus breed and along with this we take our responsibility of stewardship for the land seriously by protecting and preserving the range and wildlife with no-till tillage, dams, crop rotation, and food plots. The success of our business involves dedicated management and goal planning. With all aspects of the ranch we address issues on a daily basis including herd health, equipment maintenance, and planting schedules. We monitor our pastures and rotate to prevent overgrazing by livestock. Native grass and crop acres are set aside for the preservation of the game bird and deer population. As part of the River Hills Ranch operation we also manage River Hills Lodge, a Pheasant Hunting Preserve located 10 miles east of the ranch.
Our mission here at River Hills Ranch is and has always been to produce a quality product that the customer demands. In order to accomplish this we use strict guidelines of high production, superior performance, strong carcass genetics and outstanding phenotype. Our goal is achievable through extensive A.I. and embryo transfer where we identify sound, proven genetics to produce balanced-trait cattle that exhibit great maternal ability, soundness, good dispositions and structural correctness.
Our direction is practical, alive, and aggressive performance-based. River Hills Ranch produces a product designed for cattlemen and their goals for tomorrow.
As we work at improving each phase of the River Hills Ranch operation we continue to monitor our strengths and weaknesses. Ultimately our goal is to provide our customers with the genetics and products that will enrich their operations as well. We look forward to a long future.
